SPECULATIVE FUTURE:

DEEPFAKES

What are deepfakes?

Deepfakes are created using an image synthesis technique where one person's face has been replaced by another via a series of neural networks. These videos can range in quality but the most convincing ones are incredible examples of what current artificial intelligence is capable of. You can find a variety of examples on youtube but watch out for NSFW content. Deepfakes grew in popularity after a Reddit page, /r/deepfakes, started posting doctored porn of celebrities.

System Mapping

For a better understanding of deepfakes and where they came from I did some research. First I dug deep into the technologies that have made deepfakes possible and their origins. I then explored the impact that deepfakes have had or may potentially have on society and culture in the future. To display this information clearly I created a map of the system. The dark blue nodes are key people and the lighter blue nodes are technologies, groups, companies, etc.

The top right portion is a simplified history of the technology used to produce deepfakes.

The upper left portion is connected to that, showing the open source technologies used by people who aren't as well versed in AI.

The bottom left portion is the short history of the Reddit user Deepfakes who played a large role in the popularization of deepfakes and the impact that was made.

The bottom right showcases the most recent reaction to the existence and use of deepfakes.

Predictive Product:

In response to my research, I then created a predictive product of the future that I believe will be available in the next 5-7 years due to the affordances of deepfake technology. After some brainstorming, I came up with the idea for a service where you can send and receive video messages from loved ones who have passed. The name of this service is iris.

To send a message with iris:

  1. Upload a set of images and videos of the "sender"

  2. Input date and time of video receipt

  3. Submit preferred method of delivery (email, SMS, other)

  4. Select from message types: birthday, graduation, and more

  5. Add extra features: name personalization, write your own script, multi-person

Disaster Exhibit

For the third part of this project, I imagined the worst possible outcome of widespread use of iris or deepfake technology in general.

To do so I created a timeline describing the events which transpired, ending in the year 2038 when an exhibition reflecting on the disaster is taking place.

The title of the exhibition is Disastrous Deception: Looking Back at the Post-Truth Information War.

After making the timeline I then designed and built the exhibition space using Cinema 4D. At the entrance is a brief background of deepfakes and the context of the disaster. On the next two walls is the timeline, followed by a video wall where videos taken throughout the past 20 years pertaining to the issue will be played. Below the second half of the timeline, there are 6 pedestals.

Each pedestal will hold an iPhone or iPod touch with content such as Reddit pages, conversations between protesters, and propaganda which correspond to the events above them on the timeline. In the center of the room, there is a table above which is a hologram of the globe. This hologram is interactive, allowing visitors to explore the events of the past by location.
